It seems like you can never have enough greens, until
now! STURBRIDGE

Note: This quilt is composed of 18 blocks, each with a finished
size of 12". The blocks are set on-point, off-set and
colored differently to create the illusion of floating nine
patches. Use an accurate 1/4" seam allowance, especially
when constructing the nine patches! |

Cuting Guide: |
There are
eight blocks that are colored identically which are on the two
outside edges of the quilt. To construct one of these blocks,
cut as follows:
From N869-114, cut two squares 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
From N873-114, cut four squares 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
From N868-114, cut twelve squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
From N879-142, cut three squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
From N877-114, cut twelve squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8" |
 |
Begin by making the nine patch unit.
Lay out the small squares to form a nine patch unit. Sew the
squares together in rows & then sew the rows together. For
this block, the light colored squares go in the outer corners of
the block. |
Repeat to make three of these nine patch units.
Then, lay out the squares with the nine patch units to form the
block coloring as shown. Sew the squares into three rows &
then sew the rows into a block.
Repeat to make a total of eight blocks in this coloration. |
 |
 |
Using these same measurements & cutting directions, you'll
also need to make six blocks using:
From N871-114, cut two squares 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
From N864-114, cut four squares 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
From N866-114, cut twelve squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
From N865-142, cut three squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
From N874-114, cut twelve squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8" |
 |
Then, make four blocks using the same measurements and cutting
directions.
From N869-114, cut two squares 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
From N873-114, cut four squares 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
From N879-142, cut twelve squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
From N879-114, cut three squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
From N880-114, cut twelve squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8" |
 |
The setting triangles include squares and nine patches to
continue the design of the quilt. You need four nine patches
made from the following strips as well as the pieces to complete
the setting triangles:
From N866-114, cut twelve squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
From N865-142, cut three squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
From N874-114, cut twelve squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
From N878-114, cut one square 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" and cut
in half on the diagonal to form two triangles
From N878-114, cut four strips 3 3/8" x 18 1/8". Use
the 45º markings on your ruler to cut both ends of the strip to
form a parallelogram. |
 |
| Sew a
triangle to each side of the nine patch. Then sew that unit onto
the parallelogram. |
There are also six setting triangles with plain fabric squares
on the tip. To make these, use the same steps above, but cut the
following fabrics:
From N871-114, cut six squares 4 1/2 x 4 1/2"
From N878-114, cut one square 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" and cut
in half on the diagonal to form two triangles
From N878-114, cut four strips 3 3/8" x 18 1/8". Use
the 45º markings on your ruler to cut both ends of the strip to
form a parallelogram.
For the four corner triangles from N878-114, cut two squares 9
3/8" x 9 3/8" and cut in half on the diagonal to form
four triangles.
Sew the blocks & setting triangles together in diagonal
rows.
Measure the length of your quilt top. Cut 1 1/2" wide
strips from N878-114 and piece them together to equal the
length. Sew on the strips. |
 |
 |
Measure the width of your quilt. Cut strips 1 7/8" wide
from N878-114 and piece them together to equal the width. Sew on
the strips.
Measure the width and length of your quilt again. Cut strips 2
3/4" wide from N879-114 and piece them together to equal
the width & length. Sew on the strips. |
 |
The outer border includes on-point nine patch blocks along with
strips of N876-114. To construct the nine patches, use the
directions above & cut the following pieces:
From N866-114, cut twelve squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
From N865-142, cut three squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
From N874-114, cut twelve squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
The nine patches are set on point with triangles from N876-114.
Cut five squares 7" x 7" and cut in half on both
diagonals to form 20 triangles. Cut 8 squares 3 3/4" x 3
3/4" and cut in half on the diagonal to form small
triangles. |
Construct strips of these nine patches & triangles according
to the diagram: |
| Make 6 of these
units. |

(Unit 1) |
Make 8 of these units:
Sew a Unit 2 onto both ends of Unit 1. Repeat to make a second
row in this manner.
Then, sew two Unit 1s together and then attach a Unit 2 to each
end of that pieced section. Repeat to make a second row like
this.
Measure the length of your quilt. Measure the length of a pieced
unit that has one Unit 1 and two Unit 2s (three piece unit).
Subtract that measurement from the length of your quilt. Add
1/2" to this sum. Cut two strips 6 1/2" wide by your
sum. Sew one of these strips to a three piece unit. Repeat with
the other strip & three piece unit. Sew these strips onto
the sides of the quilt.
Repeat this process to make your top & bottom border units
using the remaining pieced units that have two Unit 1s and two
Unit 2s.
Cut binding strips 2-1/2" wide from N879-114. Layer, quilt
& bind as desired. |
The ends of each unit are constructed as follows:
