your décor, even your mood! Create a set in complementary
tones; you can even re-size them to your liking. |
Sunburst
Pillow
You’ll Need:
Wool: (4) 18” square
(3 accent colors plus 1 for backing)
Pillow form or fiberfill
Thread to match top color
Coordinating thread or embroidery floss
Chalk or fade-away marking pen (test on fabric first!) |
- Layer the two uppermost accent colors. On
the top layer draw a 4” diameter circle in the center,
then draw an 11” diameter circle around it.
- Dissect the area between the circles into
16 evenly spaced “spokes” (first divide into four
quadrants, then divide each quadrant into four sections.) At
each of the 16 marks, stitch 1/8” down each side of the
spoke line. Slash between each pair of stitching lines up
to, but not through, the circle markings. Pinch the centers
between each spoke section to create the dimensional pleats;
stitch at the centers with contrast thread or floss as
shown. Trim away ¼” around all four sides of the top
layer.
- Place the third accent color behind the
pillow top. Sew around each of the circles through all
thicknesses. Reinforce stitches at the spoke cut lines.
Brush away chalk lines. Place pillow backing behind the
third layer. Sew around the edges through all thicknesses,
leaving an opening to insert the pillow form or fiberfill.
Stuff pillow and continue stitching around to close the
opening.

Layered Appliqué Pillows
You’ll Need:
Wool, cut into rectangles of desired size & shape
Wool remnants
Contrast thread or embroidery floss
Optional: Fabric glue or glue gun or fusible web
Pillow forms or fiberfill |
- Follow the shapes in the photo, or cut your
own appliqué shapes freehand, varying the sizes for layered
effects if desired. Position appliqués on the pillow top to
create a pleasing arrangement. Secure appliqués to the
pillow front by stitching, gluing or fusing.
- Cut pillow back just larger than the front
to show as a contrast “binding” from the front. Sew back
to front close to the front edge, leaving an opening for the
pillow form or fiberfill. Stuff pillow and continue
stitching around to close the opening.
