Fabric Requirements

Cutting
Fabric A 2 yd 6952-0113 multi-stripe (8) 6-1/2" x width of fabric
(wof) strips for mitered borders
Fabric B 1-1/4 yd 6956-0113 floral stripe (8) 6-1/2" x 19-1/4" strips fussy strips cutting on stripe as shown on quilt photo
Fabric C 1/2 yd 6955-0132 stripe (2) 6-1/2" x wof strips, recut into
(8) 6-1/2" squares
Fabric D 1 yd 6760-0116 plaid (5) 2-1/2" x wof strips, sew together end-to-end then recut
(2) 48-1/2" vertical borders and
(2) 52-1/2" horizontal borders
Fabric E 1/2 yd 6761-0154 small print (6) 2" x wof strips, sew together end-to-end, then recut
(2) vertical borders 2" x 56-1/2" and
(2) horizontal borders 2" x 59-1/2"
Fabric F 3/4 yd 6753-0142 large floral (6) 2-1/2" x wof strips, sew together end-to-end, then recut
(2) 2-1/2" x 52-1/2" vertical borders and
(2) 2-1/2" x 56-1/2" horizontal borders.
Use remainder of fabric to paper piece the center dart in the Crossed Canoe blocks.
Fabric G 1/3 yd 6752-0113 large floral Use for paper piecing center darts in Crossed Canoe blocks.
Fabric H 1/3 yd 6757-0142 small floral Use for paper piecing center darts in Crossed Canoe blocks.
Fabric I 1/3 yd 6756-0113 small floral Use for paper piecing center darts in Crossed Canoe blocks.
Fabric J 1/3 yd 6953-0129 dots Use for paper piecing triangles in Crossed Canoe blocks.
Fabric K 1/3 yd 6953-0142 dots Use for paper piecing triangles in Crossed Canoe blocks.
Fabric L 1/3 yd 6954-0123 Paisley Use for paper piecing triangles in Crossed Canoe blocks.
Fabric M 1/3 yd J445-0142 Use for paper piecing triangles in Crossed Canoe blocks.
Backing: 4-1/4 yd fabric J, cut in half from selvedge to selvedge to make (2) pieces, then sew together along selvedge edges. Cut to 75" square for quilt backing.
Binding: 2/3 yd fabric E, cut (8) 2-1/4" x wof strips and sew together end-to-end.

Sewing

  1. Paper piece (10) block units with fabric G darts and fabric K triangles. Paper piece (10) block units with fabric F darts and fabric J triangles. Using 2 units in each fabric combination piece the units together to complete a block. Make 5 blocks.
  1. Paper piece (8) block units with fabric H darts and fabric L triangles. Paper piece (8) block units with fabric I darts and fabric M triangles. Using 2 units in each fabric combination piece the units together to complete a block. Make 4 blocks.
  1. Piece 2 fabric K 6-1/2" squares together with the diagonal strips meeting at the seam in a chevron pattern. Make 4. Sew each of these units to one side of each of the Crossed Canoe blocks made in step 2.
  1. Using the fabric B strips, sew to two adjacent sides of 4 of the blocks made in step 1. Miter the corners and trim away excess fabric. Note that two of the blocks will be bordered with a light square in the corner and two of the blocks will be bordered with a dark square in the corner.
  1. Sew the units made in steps 3 and 4 plus the 1 remaining block from step 1 into 3 rows. Sew the rows together.
  1. Sew the fabric D vertical borders to the quilt sides and the fabric D horizontal borders to the top and bottom of the quilts. Repeat with the fabric F borders and then the fabric E borders.
  2. Center and sew the fabric A 84" borders to one side of the quilt with an equal amount of border fabric overlapping at each end. Repeat for each side of the quilt. Miter the corners and trim away excess fabric.


Finishing
  1. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing. Baste, then quilt the layers together.
  2. Sew the fabric E binding strips together end to end, fold over lengthwise and sew to quilt top. Turn binding to back of quilt and stitch in place.
