| Denim Trivia
|
Denim could well be known as "America's Favorite Fabric", yet its roots are international. Marcus' own DENIM is available in five colors, in a mid-weight that works beautifully with traditional quilt fabrics, flannel and others, for quilts, accessories, clothing and casual home decor. We uncovered some fun facts about this classic textile:- The word denim is an adaptation of the French name "serge de Nimes," a fabric which originated in Nimes, France during the Middle Ages.
- The word "dungarees" is one of the few English-language words to have come from Hindi, one of the major languages of India. There, the term "dungrí", is used to describe a coarsely woven fabric.
- It's reported that the sails of Columbus' ships were made of denim. In addition, sailors from Genoa, known as "Genes", wore pants made from the heavyweight fabric, which later were called "jeans."
